The KRISTIAN SCHULTZE SET album, with the original title OVERDRIVE, was initially released in 1972 on Tempo Records. It was an absolute exception in German jazz music and much sought after in jazz and rare groove circles.
The mastermind and initiator behind the group was keyboarder KRISTIAN SCHULTZE, who created an unique style with his blend of spacey sounds, kicking a Fender Rhodes through a ring modulator. KRISTIAN SCHULTZE was born in 1945. He studied composition and piano at Berlin Music University and Graz Jazz academy. During these years KRISTIAN SCHULTZE met JOE NAY, who's been rated as the best German drummer ever by many jazz fans and experts. JOE NAY died in a car accident in 1991. In the late 60s both met again in Munich and used to jam at the legendary jazz club "DOMICILE". There they met the Polish bass player PAWEL JAZERBSKI and along with him they formed the trio called THE BRIDGE. The trio played many gigs in the major German jazz clubs, occasionally supported by OLAF KÜBLER on sax and DUSKO GOYKOVICH on trumpet. OLAF KÜBLER is an important figure in the German jazz scene; Krautrock fans know him as the AMON DÜÜL 2 producer.
DUSKO GOYKOVICH, whom DIZZY GILLESPIE described as a "hell of a trumpet player", is already a cult figure. He has performed with the bulk of famous jazz musicians.
In 1972 the KRISTIAN SCHULTZE SET recorded just one album. Different influences on it are melting into rare fusion, bridging the gap between jazz, e-music and pop. All of KRISTIAN SCHULTZE compositions are denying any rigid classification. His smooth way to play keyboards leads to an undreamt-of tension when meeting with the rough and tough electronic sounds of his fender piano and synthesizer. JOE NAY and PAWEL JAZERBSKI add their straight rhythm and the result is a brilliant, funky permutation of jazz. This re-issue "RECREATION" contains one additional, previously unreleased track with a sax and trumpet. The line-up for this album is simply called KRISTIAN SCHULTZE SET.
A few more words on KRISTIAN SCHULTZES career; From 1973 to 1977 he was the keyboarder of DOLDINGERS PASSPORT. He quit in order to join the funk-jazz band "SNOWBALL" of drummer CURT CRESS. Since 1980 he is concentrating more on composing, arranging and producing all kind of pop-music as well as TV- and movie-music, working in his own studio, D.I. Musikstudio GmbH, which was founded in 1980. With singer-publisher MICHAEL HOLM he is running an instrumental project called "CUSCO" which is so far consisted of 21 CDs and is extremely successful in America.
